You will be asked 2 of these questions as part of your practical test.
1. Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine-oil level and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil ?
Answer :
Identify the dipstick/ oil level indicator; describe the check of the oil level against the minimum and maximum markers.
2. Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine coolant level and tell me how you would check that the engine has the correct level ?
Answer :
identify high / low level markings on the header tank (where fitted ) or radiator filler cap, and describe how to top up to the correct level.
3. Identify where the windscreen washer reservoir is and tell me how you would check the windscreen washer level ?
Answer :
Identify the reservoir and explain how to check the level.
4. Open the bonnet, identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid ?
Answer :
Identify reservoir, check level against high / low markings.
5. Show me how you would check that the brake lights are working on this car ? ( The examiner can assist you, if you need the ignition on dont start the engine. )
Answer :
Operate the brake pedal, make use of reflections in windows, garage doors etc or ask someone to help you check them.
6. Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey ?
Answer :
Brakes should not feel spongey or slack. Brakes should be tested before you set of. The vehicle should not pull to one side.
7. Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked ?
Answer :
The manufacturers hand book. Check and adjust pressures when tyres are cold. Remember to re-fit the valve caps. Don't forget the spare tyre. Use a reliable pressure guage.
8. Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road ?
Answer :
Tyres should have no cuts or bulges, 1.6 mm of tread depth across the central three quarters of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire outer circumference.
9. Show me/ explain how you would check that the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey ?
Answer :
If the steering becomes heavy the system may not be working properly. Gentle pressure on the steering wheel, maintained while starting the engine should result in a slight but noticeable movement as the system begins to operate.
10. Tell me how you would check the headlights and tail lights are working ? ( No need to exit the vehicle )
Answer :
Operate switch, ( Turn on ignition if necessary ) walk around vehicle.
11. Show me how you would check that the direction indicators are working ?
Answer :
Apply the indicator switch ( turn on ignition if necessary ) or use the hazard warning switch. Walk around car and check they are working.
12. Show me how you would check that the horn is working ? ( off road only )
Answer :
Press the horn switch ( turn on ignition if necessary )
13. Show me how you would check the parking brake ( Hand Brake ) for excessive wear ?
( Apply the foot brake to keep control of the vehicle ) Release the hand brake and re apply showing that it doesn't travel excessively and that it secures the car.
14. Show me how you would clean the windscreen using the windscreen washers and wipers ?
Answer :
Operate the appropriate switch as per the manufacturers hand book on the vehicle. You may need the ignition on to do this.
15. Show me how you would set the demister controls to clear all the windows effectively ? This should include front and rear screens.
Answer :
Operate the appropriate controls switch for both front and rear screens as per the manufacturers handbook. You will need the ignition on for this.
16. Show me how you would switch on the rear fog lights and explain when you would use them ? No need to exit vehicle and don't start the engine.
Answer :
Operate the appropriate switch as per the manufacturers handbook. You would use them when visibility is less than 100 metres ( as per the highway code )
17. Show me how you would switch the headlights from dipped beam to main beam ? and how you would know that you where on main beam whilst in the car ?
Answer :
Operate the appropriate switch as per the manufacturers handbook and note the colour of the warning light displayed in the instrument panel. The standard code is green for dipped lights and blue for main beam.
18. Tell me how you would know that your head restraint is correctly adjusted so that it provides the best protection in the event of an accident ?
Answer :
The head restraint should be adjusted so that the rigid part of the head restraint is at least as high as the eyes or the top of the ears and as close to the back of the head as is comfortable.
19. Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your anti lock braking system ?
Answer :
Check that the appropriate symbol used in the instrument panel goes out when the engine is started and remains off for the duration of the journey.
